Basics of glow - Snail mucin

It’s that time again – basics of glow is back. In this post, we will talk about snail mucin. What is it? Where does it come from? Why is it beneficial?

Before we started our GLOWRIOUS blog, we had a long chat about what we miss in Switzerland in terms of beauty blogs. A thing we could all agree on was a platform that doesn’t only introduce and review products but also informs about the ingredients and their impact and benefits. In our basics of glow section we do exactly that. We talk about the ingredients and what to look for when buying a beauty product. Knowing the ingredients and how they work will not only make you a conscious buyer but also help you telling advertising gimmicks from ingredients that really work.

There is a certain ingredient that always keeps popping up in the Korean (and recently in the Western) beauty industry: snail mucin. But what is it all about? What makes women all over the world smear snail goo all over their faces? After reading our post you will wonder why you haven’t been doing it yet.

What is snail mucin?

style="float:Before we get to the ‘why’, let’s start with finding out what snail mucin actually is. As the name already gives away, snail mucin is the secretion produced by snails. Snails are gastropods and produce this sticky fluid for two reasons: The mucin serves as adhesive agent which helps them sticking to the surface and even defying gravity by keeping them on the surface while climbing upside down. Another thing that gets easier for snails thanks to the mucus is shifting. However, snails produce mucin even when they are not moving in order to protect themselves from bacteria, sharp objects, UV rays and injuries in general. The snail mucin serves as a lubricant and boosts the wound healing. So how does that snail mucin thingie get into the bottle? In order to harvest snail mucin, snails are being fed a clean diet and put on a slightly rough and electrified surface. This is when they start producing mucin to lubricate themselves. The fluid is then collected, purified and used for cosmetics. At GLOWRIOUS we only use snail mucin from the brands where we know the snails are not being hurt and where species-appropriate treatment is ensured.

Why snail mucin?

Peppered with Collagen, Glycolic- and Hyaluronic Acid the snail mucin is also antimicrobial and rich in anti-oxidants. Just as it helps the snails increasing the wound healing it does the same to your skin by boosting the skin cell regeneration process and is a strong lubricant. Another reason why snail mucin is very popular and commonly used in anti-acne products is it’s beneficial effect on acne scars. So if you are dealing with acne marks you want to be gone, you might want to try this mild alternative to harsh ointments.

My first snail product was the mizon snail repair ampoule and it gave me a bad breakout. I thought it’s cause of snail mucin so I was a little careful then. Gave cosrx a try then and it did wonders. So happy I gave this a chance.

I’ve told you many things about vitamin C and how marvelous it can be for our skin in terms of anti-ageing and protection from environmental influences. But do you remember that I also told you about how easily its effects are supercharged by manyfolds if you just combine it with a product containing vitamin E?
Btw. it looks and feels like pudding. It doesn’t taste like it tho. Sad life of Virginia.
